A very brief overview of the Colonial Parish System
I made it out to the Virginia Historical Society today with one goal. I wanted to find out about the history, geography, and time-line of Bristol Parish, VA. (Old Blandford Church is one of the earliest brick churches built in the Parish of Bristol. ) In a previous post, I gave a very simple lineage for my Briley line. The last ancestor I have listed is John Briley. It is believed he is from Virginia and moved … Read entire article »

That SwagBucks button…
If you use Google as a search engine, and order books from Amazon, I would highly recommend SwagBucks. SB is essentially a search engine (that uses Google and Ask.com for results) that will award you Swagbucks randomly for using their interface. Once you earn a certain amount of Swagbucks, you can redeem them for prizes. My personal favorite is the $5 Amazon.com gift card for 45 Swagbucks. They have other Swag to grab too. It … Read entire article »

Week of Jan 17 in review
I started this week with great optimism and high hopes. I was planning my visit to the Virginia Historical Society and I had a smile on my face. Then Monday came, and I was brought low by a stomach bug my kindergartner had brought home the week before. I was sick and achy and had a fever. I am not a good patient, by the way. My daughter got it next. I felt better on … Read entire article »

Meet my Brileys
My family of Brileys are from Pitt County, NC. They settled in the area when NC was just being founded as a colony. Actually, Pitt County was part of Beaufort County. We are pretty sure that one of the ancestors granted land, William Briley, was the son of John Briley of Bristol Parish, VA. John S. Briley 1884-1944 (my g-gf)< John W. Briley 1854-1927(my g-g-gf)< Marcellus Briley abt 1836-1902 <James Briley abt 1805- bef 1850 <William Briley< William Briley< John Briley< ? James Briley, the father of Marcellus, died young, with young children. His mother, Sarah, left a will that lists 4 grandchildren and her living children. Marcellus is listed as a grandchild. Bless that woman for her forethought, because so many records were destroyed in a courthouse fire. I am re-working a research file and log on excel, … Read entire article »

Resolution to organize update
I have been busy this past week, so be on the lookout for more posting next week. I have been cleaning out the genealogy storage and hope to begin digitizing records and pictures tonight. I figure digitizing will take me a good 40 hours of work, getting quicker as I learn the process. I have quite a few Pitt County, NC land records to digitize. I think I have more than a few duplicates. I have some good Briley pictures to digitize, some of our Briley family cemetery, so I will be looking at forming a Flikr group to privately share these photos. I feel like I am where I should be at this point in the restart process. Good luck on your resolutions! … Read entire article »

2010 Genealogy Goals
Since I have taken such a long break from actually working on my genealogy, I have some very basic goals for this new year. I have 4 goals this year: Organize, organize, organize! I need to get back into the nitty gritty of my paperwork and remember the exact things I am looking for and where I left off. I also want to switch genealogy programs, and may just manually enter as much as I can from my paperwork before importing my research GEDCOM. Which leads me to my second goal - Digitize, digitize, digitize! I have a DVD burner and a scanner, use them! It is much easier to look up digitized information and share it than it is to dig through tons of paper, that ages and collects dust. It is also easier to carry DVD’s … Read entire article »

What’s new at Briley Genealogy
There are some new features at Briley Genealogy. I have spent some time trying to decide on a course I wanted to go with both my research and the larger genealogy community as a whole. I wanted a site on the web that specifically introduced my maiden name researchers to one another and gives them a place to trade information on ancestors and relatives. So, the first part of my mission here, and the most … Read entire article »
